What is a Data Logger?

A Straightforward Analogy

Data loggers are like microphones. In fact, most microphones are used as data loggers. They record sound and save it to long-term storage. When you play back an audio file, you're hearing logged data. In a similar manner, video cameras log images 60 times a second. Their job is to periodically read a sensor and append those readings to a file.

Microphones and video cameras are two types of sophisticated data loggers we use every day, but there are many other kinds of data in our complicated world. Psychologists measure and record changes in behaviour over generations. Investors anticipate stock price fluctuations. Volcanologists calculate when the next eruption is due. These traits can only be properly quantified by analyzing data across time.

Precision Loggers™ specializes in monitoring electricity, motion, and the air for science, medicine, aerospace, and industry. Our loggers are compact electronic devices that usually have one or two highly specialized sensors. They use a wireless transmitter to communicate with our intuitive graphing software, where you can annotate critical events, overlay independent channels, compose custom equations, and much more.

The concentration of COâ‚‚ in a workplace influences cognitive performance. An excess in relative humidity can harshly affect building materials. The temperature regulation within a refrigeration unit can alter the shelf life of food or medications. Data loggers equip you to track, visualize, and act on these and other invisible trends.
